Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position will support the GIS and Asset Data organization in Southern Company Gas. The GIS Analyst will develop an understanding of current data state, workflows and processes and develop solutions for integrations, transformations and deliverables. This will include GIS data analysis, data mining, technical support and database maintenance to meet internal and external customers’ requirements.  This role requires demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and recommend the best track for data development and processing.  Project work will involve process improvement, quality control, data creation from spatial and tabular sources, conversion, migration and maintenance. This role will be responsible for identifying appropriate data sources and mapping specifications, validating completeness and data accuracy, and producing appropriate visualization and output vehicles.       

This position follows a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to be in the office four (4) days per week – Monday through Thursday.

The selected candidate will work out of the following locations. 

  • Atlanta, GA

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Technical project tasks, including database design, advanced GIS analysis and modeling
  • Performs data mining activities to meet customer requirements/specifications
  • Provides specialized queries, maps and reports to meet customer requirements/specifications
  • Performs application testing and documentation of defects
  • Interfaces with users; documents requested/needed changes
  • Interfaces with Technology Organization (TO) GIS Support group to drive development and data model changes
  • Performs weekly analysis on mission critical GIS data to audit and sustain data integrity
  • Develop methods and perform quality assurance/quality control on GIS and non-spatial data to meet quality goals
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert on GIS projects and solution definition workshops
  • Identifies training requirements; creates and maintains training and procedural documentation
  • Identifies new GIS technologies/processes/applications to improve inter-/intra- departmental functions
  • Creates and maintains existing automated processes using Model Builder/Python scripting or other tools
  • Processes, prepares and converts data to enter into GIS from a variety of data formats
  • Analyzes current business processes and recommends best practice solutions

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in geography (GIS), engineering, computer science, or related field and 3 - 5 years of experience with industry-standard GIS and verifiable Data Mining and Python scripting experience (2+ year demonstrable required). GIS certificate and 2 years of related work experience in lieu of a degree in related discipline.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in geography (GIS), geosciences, engineering, computer science, or related field

Experience

  • Experience with Esri geodatabase design, structure and management – including the manipulation of tabular data in GIS, and joining/linking related data
  • Intermediate knowledge of SQL and relational databases
  • Thorough understanding of Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcSDE, versioning, and geoprocessing
  • Experience incorporating nonspatial Enterprise databases with GIS to fulfill ad hoc analysis requests
  • Thorough understanding of Esri Utility Pipeline Data Model (UPDM) and Utility Network (UN)
  • Knowledge of batch files and Python scripts to assist in repetitive daily activities
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills and abilities database technologies, data modeling, and scripting as needed
  • Development and maintenance of existing Python scripts, FME workbenches and Esri Model Builder models
  • Knowledge of publishing with ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS, including data versioning, multiuser and replication
  • Intermediate to advanced experience in Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and other database and reporting tools.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience in programming languages R and Python.
  • Working knowledge of Data Science concepts and Machine Learning.
  • Strong analytic skills with demonstrated work experience in data mining, query writing, and visualization.
  • Intermediate knowledge in MS Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot) and applications within MS Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in Maximo, Oracle, and other ERP systems.
  • Advanced data visualization proficiency in Power BI and MS PowerPoint.
  • Experience working cross-functionally in a highly matrixed organization. 
  • Executive-level presentation skill, as well as effective verbal and written communication of complex analytical concepts.
  • General natural gas/utilities industry knowledge and/or experience a plus.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to interpret complex data sets into actionable insights.
  • Ability to inform and influence stakeholders based on findings.
  • Collaboration with multiple business functions.
  • Possess at least intermediate level of skills in Strategy Development, Strategy Execution, Project Management, Relationship Building & Influencing, Communication, Presentation, Team Building, Cultural Awareness, and Change Management.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and manage competing deadlines. 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position can require some travel – approximately 10% per year
