Job Summary

The Interpreter serves as a health care interpreter for patients and staff of Michigan Medicine (MM) Interpreter Services (IS). The Interpreter will convey health care information between monolingual speakers in compliance with all IS and UMHS policies and procedures. The Interpreter will comply with HIPAA requirements regarding patient confidentiality. The Interpreter must adhere to the competencies in the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care's (NCIHC) National Standards of Practice and the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care. You will need to travel within our main hospital and its satellite locations including those outside of Washtenaw County.  Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license are required to travel to all Michigan Medicine locations.   

 You'll also have the opportunity to participate in committees and complete projects as assigned.

Responsibilities*

  • Facilitate delivery of language services to Limited English proficient (LEP) patients and English-speaking providers.
  • Provide sight and written translation of UMHS documents for patients as needed.
  • Document patient encounter according to department standards.
  • Adhere to all relevant UMHS and Interpreter Services policies in health care interpreting.
  • Communicate Interpreter Services resources and protocols to hospital staff and patients.
  • Adhere to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) National Standards and Code of Ethics.
  • Collaborate, support, and educate one another to enhance the overall skill level and effectiveness of the entire staff.
  • Actively contribute to departmental projects and participate in team initiatives to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the department.
  • Complete projects as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Flexing and adjusting the schedule to work in-person for early appointments (starting as early as 5:30 a.m.), as well as occasional evenings and weekends, is required.

Required Qualifications*

  • Certificate in Medical Interpreting from an accredited organization.
  • Must pass a 3rd party Language and Interpreting Assessment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires prolonged standing, walking, and sitting. 

Must have reliable transportation to travel to all Michigan Medicine locations

Desired Qualifications*

  • An associate's degree in a healthcare field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
  • Fluency in English and target language(s) both in oral and written form is required.
  • Solid knowledge of medical terminology in both English and target languages(s).
  • National Certification from CCHI or NBCMI desired but not required.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
