Job Description
The Bed Control Coordinator (BCC) ensures optimal bed placement for all Admissions and internal transfer at the direction of the Hospital Administrative Supervisor (HAS) in a complex, high functioning work environment. The BCC is responsible for coordinating withand effectively communicating with the HAS throughout the day to coordinate and implement the admission, discharge and transfer of all patients currently admitted, participate in the repatriation process of Kaiser patients to KSMC and coordinates admission from specialty clinics to the hospital.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Coordination of patient placement and the complexities involved. Answering of busy phone lines. Complete emergency room admissions. Knowledge of staffed bed numbers to facilitate admissions and transfers. Knowledge of patient placement guidelines. Continuous use of EPIC, ADT, Health Connect, HAAG, Lotus Notes. Ensure accuracy of Health Connect (ADT) that pertain to the admit, discharge and transfer of patients. Continuous monitoring of Health Connect (ADT) to ensure accuracy of census information.
- Verify and update patient class at the direction of physician orders and Care Coordination. Assure accuracy of all physician assignments. Research & resolve bed flow issues. Work in collaboration with the Hospital Administrative Supervisor regarding solving of patient flow issues. Notifies HAS of admissions or public figures, newsworthy members or public relations concerns. Knowledge to determine if physicians have admitting and/or attending privileges by using the Practitioner Delineation of Privileges website.
- Produces data/reports as requested. Communicates with Infection Control as needed to determine correct identification of isolation patients and identify in HAAG.
- Maintain accuracy of information in HAAG and correctly identifies with correct identifiers. Assures accuracy of daily census (attending providers, provider service, patient class, level of care).
- Coordinates with Environmental Services (dispatch) for room cleans and other needs.
- Participate and communicates at daily huddles. Participates in the training of new hires.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
- One (1) or two (2) years hospital experience performing a variety of patient placement and/or patient flow, bed management functions, or administrative functions with strong interpersonal skills or two (2) years medical office administration experience performing administrative tasks or bed management functions with strong interpersonal skills.
- Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

- Critical thinking skills and problem solving ability.
- Excellent organizational & writing skills with flexibility & ability to multi task.
- Able to read/write/speak English fluently.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology with successful passing of medical terminology class and successful passing of screening exam of 80% or better.
- Type 35 WPM.
- Excellent verbal and communication skills.
- Three (3) years of prior experience in hospital or medical office setting performing a variety of patient placement and/or patient flow, bed management functions, or administrative functions with strong interpersonal skills.
- Working knowledge and experience with EPIC and the KP Health Connect system.
- Medical Terminology 1.
- Extensive computer and telephone experience; ability to operate office equipment, i.e., facsimile machine, copier, on-line printers and label printer.
- Creative solutions to complex patient flow/bed management issues.
- Ability to adjust learnings and application as duties change.
- Ability to handle a heavy volume of work with multiple interruptions and complexities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; independent problem-solving and teamwork; ability to communicate effectively with customers and hospital staff; ability to take action for resolution of conflicts while exhibiting professional judgment.
- One (1) or two (2) years higher education preferred.
