Effective and equitable public transit is essential to the social, economic, and environmental progress of Greater Boston.?We are a team of content specialists, designers, engineers, and product managers charged with bringing novel ideas, modern standards, and a user-centered approach to technology to the MBTA. 


As a Content Strategist L2, you'll be part of the team that writes, edits, and builds the content strategy for MBTA.com, which serves over a million people per month. You'll develop and manage digital systems, enforce technical and content standards, build and maintain information architectures, optimize web content for machine readability and performance. and use analytics software and accessibility guidelines to meet the needs of the MBTA and our audiences.We're seeking someone with strong writing, editing, and collaboration skills who is motivated to give MBTA riders and all our audiences the information they need.

Duties & Responsibilities

Content Strategy Capabilities

  • Facilitate stakeholder and team alignment using appropriate communication approaches.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Drupal or similar content management systems, including basic troubleshooting and bug reporting.
  • Apply plain language principles and adhere to accessibility standards, including WCAG.
  • Follow MBTA Content Style Guidelines and Brand Standards in all published content.

Strategy Capabilities 

  • Work with MBTA employees and external partners to rewrite, fact check, edit, and publish accurate and accessible content for the web.  
  • Use Drupal, a content management system, to upload and publish content on mbta.com.
  • Use tools like Google Analytics and SEMRush to measure and track metrics.

  • Participate in discovery meetings with stakeholders and other team members to set expectations and goals, gather reference materials, and brainstorm strategy.


Content Team Participation

  • Work with the website project manager to evaluate and establish accessibility requirements for content on mbta.com.
  • Participate in the content team's regular planning, stand up, and review meetings. 
  • Communicate solutions clearly and compellingly to a wide range of stakeholders. 
  • Identify, articulate, and escalate risk in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Work to meet tight deadlines in an environment where priorities shift and the pace fluctuates.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in content strategy, including practices, processes, and team operations.
  • Experience with search engine optimization (SEO) and analyzing website performance using Google Analytics and Search Console.
  • Proficiency with content management systems such as Drupal, WordPress, or similar platforms.
  • Working familiarity with HTML.
  • Familiarity with plain language guidelines for public-facing content and services.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders who deliver services and programs in complex, bureaucratic organizations.


Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Experience in public sector organizations, transportation agencies, or civic technology teams.
  • Experience creating accessible content for the web and applying web accessibility standards, specifically Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.

Minimum Education

  • Education in writing or a related field. This could be a college degree, a bootcamp, a certificate program, or something else entirely.

Substitutions Include

  • A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor's degree requirement.
  • An associate degree from an accredited institution an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor's degree requirement.
  • A master's degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.

  • A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or simply The T, is the public operator of most bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry systems in the greater Boston, Massachusetts, area.
