Course Description

In this writing-intensive course, performances in music, theater, film, dance, and related arts will offer us not just entertainment but also provocations to feeling and thought. We will respond to those provocations by shaping thought and feeling into carefully crafted writing that communicates our thoughts to others. We will attend a series of events presented by local performing arts organizations. We will think about differences between mediated and ?live? performances and attend to practices of attentive listening, looking, and participation as audience members. Details about featured performances will be announced in August.

141-001                  Tuesday  lectures 1-3pm (GSI attendance required)

141- 008                 Wednesday & Friday    11am-12pm

Responsibilities*

Attend required performances (usually weekend evenings); lead one discussion section (meeting from 11am-12pm each Wednesday and Friday); attend Tuesday lectures (1-3 PM), hold weekly office hours for individual consultation with students; evaluate student writing; meet once a week with professor and GSI team for course planning (time to be arranged). Attend GSI training, scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Required Qualifications*

  • To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and be registered for at least six (6) credit hours for the fall term. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with first-year writing instruction and requirements
  • General interest in performance
  • LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Once final candidate(s) are selected, offer letter(s) will be authorized. We hope to extend offer(s) by 07/15/2025. Selection Process

1) Enrollment demand, 2) Faculty preference, 3) Relevant experience, 4) External applicants only if unfilled by Comparative Literature GSI.
