Job Summary

The athletic trainer plays a critical role in ensuring the health, safety and performance of over 250 varsity student-athletes in addition to 25 other club sport participants. The majority of this work is clinical in nature with more of an emphasis on prioritizing one on one patient care. The scope of work includes, but is not limited to, evaluation, rehabilitation, manual therapy, dry needling, concussion management and movement analysis. In addition, there is an administrative scope of work that includes policy development, treatment protocols, pre-participation screening, health and safety training, emergency procedures, club sport oversight and budget management. Field experience in this position is highly valued given that this position requires independent oversight and direction of multiple athletic teams and/or student-athletes throughout the year.

Essential Functions

Athletic Trainer Duties (80%):

  • Provide medical coverage for all intercollegiate sport teams.
  • Evaluate and manage the care of athletic injuries.
  • Independently make decisions to determine participation in practice and competition for athletes on intercollegiate teams.
  • Provide emergency medical care for injured athletes on site.
  • Coordinate rehabilitation programs, treatment protocols and triage athletes with health service providers.
  • Travel to away competitions to provide treatment for sports when necessary. Instruct and certify athletic department staff in First Aid and CPR certifications. Coordinate and communicate medical treatment with Schact Health Services, physicians, team orthopedic and other medical personnel.
  • Communicate effectively with coaches and athletes about medical and sport related injuries/illnesses.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records of injury or illness, evaluations, treatments and referrals.
  • Schedule medical coverage for practices and competitions.
  • Complete insurance records for injured student athletes and send to medical providers, parents and/or insurance company.
  • Provide care and coverage for all visiting team institutions when on the Smith College campus.
  • Pre-screen all varsity student-athletes prior to participation.
  • Implement and adhere to all Return To Play protocols.

Athletic Training Operations (15%):

  • Stay current with the developments in athletic training profession.
  • Maintain current certifications; NATABOC, First Aid and CPR, licensed in Massachusetts.
  • Order supplies and create a budget.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate assistant(s).

Programming (5%)

  • Create and implement preventative programming as it relates to concussion management, mental health, nutrition and injury prevention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

  • Graduate Degree - Field: Athletic Training
  • 8 or more years experience - Area: Athletic training experience
  • Required Certification(s): NATA BOC, First Aid and CPR
  • Required License(s): Current NATA License/Certification through MA dept of Allied Health

Knowledge of:

  • Injury prevention, evaluation, care and rehabilitation

Skills:

  • Effective communication, experience with insurance companies/policies, computer skills, ability to work independently and make autonomous decisions around student-athlete health and safety

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree - Field: Athletic Training
  • 12 or more years experience - Area: Athletic Training at the collegiate level
  • Preferred Certification(s) : NATA BOC, First Aid and CPR, Dry Needling
  • Preferred License(s): NATA through MA dept of Allied Health

Knowledge of:

  • Preference given to those individuals who have worked within intercollegiate athletics.

Skills:

  • Effective communication, experience with insurance companies/policies, computer skills, ability to work independently and make autonomous decisions around student-athlete health and safety, experience with collision sports.

Compensation

In addition to a competitive benefits package, pay for this role is typically between $62,816.36 - $84,986.84 annually covering the middle half of market compensation. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications.
