Job Summary

To perform work in the maintenance, repair and cleaning of sanitary and storm water drainage systems and fixtures.

Responsibilities*

  • Drive and operate sanitary and storm water vacuum trucks.
  • Operate engine powered centrifugal compressor vacuums and high-pressure jet rodders.
  • Clean sanitary and storm water drainage systems, window wells, fresh air intakes, pump lift stations, electrical vaults and other similar areas using vacuum trucks and related equipment.
  • Respond to sanitary and storm water drainage system piping breaks and assist with repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain sanitary water drainage systems, including main line sewer piping
  • Cut or bore through walls, ceilings, partitions and floors to access sanitary water drainage piping.
  • Remove and reinstall commodes, urinals, p-traps, cleanouts and other fixtures as necessary to facilitate the maintenance and cleaning of sanitary water drainage piping.
  • Prepare documents including non-hazardous waste manifests, bills of lading, and service records of daily activities for submittal to EH&S or as otherwise required.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications as related to sanitary and storm water drainage systems.
  • Locate cross connections between sanitary and storm water drainage systems using dye testing.
  • Inspect sanitary and storm water piping with specialized video equipment.
  • Repair and install gate boxes.
  • Respond to water main breaks and assist with repairs, including water valve repair and installation.
  • Locate and exercise water main valves.
  • Remove snow from around fire hydrants and storm water drain grates.
  • Respond to non-hazardous spills.
  • Expose underground utilities for maintenance, installation and repair activities.
  • Mark underground drainage and water lines as requested for digging purposes.
  • As necessary, electronically mark-up and submit buried utility position information for the purposes of updating the University's GIS website.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints, sketches and schematic diagrams 
  • Must be able to fulfill the necessary requirements to drive a University vehicle 
  • Possession of the required Department of Transportation Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher
  • Class N (Tanker) CDL endorsement

Desired Qualifications*

  • Reasonable knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods and materials involved in sanitary and storm water drainage work 
  • Specialized training operating sanitary and storm water vacuum trucks and equipment 
  • Drain snaking and jetting experience 
  • Familiarity with MISS DIG
  • Computer skills
  • Experience working with and repairing domestic water mains
  • State of Michigan (EGLE) water distribution license S-4 or higher

Licensure & Certification

Class N (Tanker) CDL endorsement

Possession of the required Department of Transportation Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday,  7am - 3:30pm

This position may sometimes need to report after hours due to urgent issues on campus.
