Job Description
The Scrum Master's primary accountabilities are coaching Scrum theory and practice as well as improving the delivery effectiveness of the team. The Scrum Master works closely with the Product Management team, Team Lead developer and Software Development Manager to ensure sprint deliverables are on track and align with the Product Roadmap. They are deeply engaged with two to three delivery teams identifying improvement opportunities and helping adopt modern software engineering practices. The Scrum Master helps the organization embrace an empirical and data-driven approach to complex work and removes barriers to smooth delivery.
Primary Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
- Guides the assigned team(s) and organization on how to leverage and mature Agile/Scrum practices and values to maximize the delivery of business value
- Tracks and publishes prescribed product, team delivery, and engineering metrics. Exhibits ability to analyze collected data and present findings/trends to stakeholders
- Serves as a liaison between engineering leadership and teams helping to align strategic priorities and objectives with execution plans, timelines, and overall delivery of value to the organization
- Guides the team on applying self-managing, team-centered behaviors; analyzing and adapting to the feedback inputs (eg. Metrics, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives, etc.) to build high performing teams.
- Proactively identifies systemic impediments and provides strategic recommendations to engineering managers and leadership
- Builds a trusting environment where issues are raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis on correcting and problem solving
- Facilitates the completion of assignments efficiently and without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work
- Champions and exemplifies collaborative discussion, decision making, and problem solving. Provides coaching and guidance to other Scrum Masters in identifying and adopting good practices to maximize team productivity, effectiveness, and growth.
- Drives consistent standards, practices, and methods for internal communication, improving transparency and radiating information to all involved stakeholders
- Coordinates and encourages participation from all team members in Scrum events and longer term planning exercises (Road Mapping, Release Planning)
- Supports the Product Management team in applying agile and Scrum principles and practices; helps in refining and maintaining the product backlog.
- Coordinates with project managers and product owners to identify and mitigate risks
- Promotes a learning organization and mentoring
- Has an advanced understanding of how to determine and progress team maturity
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Strong understanding of the Agile Manifesto, principles, values, and the ability to teach/mentor other Agilists and Development Team members
- Mastery of multiple Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP, etc...) and expertise in evaluating and applying the proper framework(s) in diverse and challenging environments
- Solid understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle
- Experience as a Scrum Lead for 1-5 years for a software development team utilizing Agile/Scrum principles
- Good skills and knowledge of servant leadership, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency
- Ability to anticipate issues based on experience to help the team avoid or resolve the issues.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including active listening
- Experience with Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar ticket and project tracking software
- Advanced experience with organizing Product Backlog, Delivery Plans, and Capacity Plans
- Strong experience and familiarity with team collaboration tools such as MS Teams, Confluence, Monday.com
- Knowledge of and/or experience with writing effective user stories and acceptance criteria.
- One of the following certifications:
- Certified Scrum Master (CSM) - Scrum Alliance
- Professional Scrum Master (PSM I) - Scrum.org
- ICAgile Certified Professional (ICP) - IC Agile
One or more of the following qualifications Preferred
- Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt
- Kanban Management Professional (KMP) - Kanban University
- Certified LeSS Practitioner (CLP) - Large-Scale Scrum
- Certified Agile Facilitator (CAF) - Scrum Alliance
