    Job Summary

Role of the Tutor: When considering your application for this position, it's important to note that tutors are not editors. They work holistically with all phases of the writing process to help students develop their own ideas, work through writing related issues, learn to use online writing and citation resources, and receive feedback based on the tutors? own understanding as a reader-not authoritatively evaluate like an editor or teacher. This distinction can often be a shock to new tutors. The most important skills in a tutor's toolbox are interpersonal communication: asking thoughtful questions, active listening, being a collaborator, and empowering the student's own ideas. Therefore, there is an initial training phase, but training continues throughout the tutor's employment. We also have required attendance at monthly staff meetings that occur on Fridays that supports additional training and professional development.

    Job duties include:

    • Tutor undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and disciplines with writing and speaking
    • Tutor community members on writing and speaking
    • Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring
    • Participate in professional development
    • Tutor in-person and online
      • Some evening and weekend online hours possible, but not until fully trained and completed at least one semester of tutoring
    • Assist the director and coordinator with Writing Center research and data collection
    • Help develop writing and tutoring support materials
    • Contribute to educational programs, such as classroom visits and workshops
    • Contribute to marketing: social media, marketing materials, and the website
    • Help with community engagement projects and tutoring
    • Mentor tutors in training
    • Attend required monthly, Friday staff meetings
    • Assist with day to day front desk support:
      • answer phones
      • use the WC Online scheduling system
      • greet and assist clients
      • Support and maintain daily writing center operations, and other duties as assigned
