Our Microelectronics Design & Applications (MDA)business unit is leading efforts to transform computing, combining the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop revolutionary energy-efficient computing systems. The qualified candidate will work in a fast-paced team environment alongside a broad array of engineers to make these next generation processing solutions a reality.
Northrop Grumman is seeking Physicists. This position will be located in-person at our Mission Systems sector in Linthicum, MD. The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman's Microelectronics Center, Microelectronics Design & Applications business unit.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Selected candidates will be aligned to either the RQL Digital Development group or the Component Development group.
RQL Digital Development Group:
• Apply your skills as a Physicist/Engineer while learning about superconducting technology including NG's patented Reciprocal Quantum Logic (RQL)
• Design, layout, and verify custom integrated circuits in NG superconducting technologies
• Work with high-frequency simulation and Multiphysics software tools such as ANSYS (HFSS/Maxwell3D), ADS (Momentum), COMSOL, etc.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts, product owners, and other team members to develop, document, and propagate best practices
• Support test and test-development activities for Quantum electronics research and development
Component Development Group:
• Develop and innovate state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools/techniques for designing and characterizing superconducting qubit circuits
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of theorists, designers, and experimentalists. Employ simulation tools to interpret experimental results and further refine models used to inform future designs.
• Code in Python, in a peer reviewed git repository, to support the upkeep of simulation tools
• Communicate status updates and outputs to the rest of the team. Contribute to team's documentation efforts
This requisition may be filled as an Associate Physicist or Physicist.
Basic Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications for an Associate Physicist:
• Be completing or has completed their Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
• Be majoring in or having majored in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Science, or other closely related STEM field
• Be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance - TS/SCI with Full-Scope Polygraph - (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
• The ability to obtain Special Access Program within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs
Basic Qualifications for a Physicist:
• Be completing or has completed their Master's degree from an accredited institution
• Be majoring in or having majored in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Science, or other closely related STEM field
• Be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance - TS/SCI with Full-Scope Polygraph - (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
• The ability to obtain Special Access Program within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs
Preferred Qualifications:
• Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher
• Coursework in Quantum Mechanics and/or Electromagnetics
• Knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following:
• Superconductor physics
• Low-temperature experiments
• Superconducting circuits and/or RF modeling and simulation
• Python, C/C++ or Matlab
• HFSS, ADS, IC Design, Ansys tools, WRSpice, Cadence, COMSOL
• Automation tools
• Data analysis, Machine Learning, AI
• An active TS/SCI clearance with Full-Scope Polygraph
Pay Range:
Associate Physicist: $72,700 - $109,100/year
Physicist: $87,600 - $131,400/year
