Job Description:
As a Software Design Engineer 4 at Microsoft, you will design and implement mission-critical software solutions that ensure telemetry health across Microsoft’s global datacenter fleet (300+ sites worldwide). Your work will directly impact the reliability and resilience of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, powering services used by millions of customers daily.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to build telemetry monitoring pipelines, automate sensor health checks, and integrate diverse data sources into robust frameworks that drive proactive alerting, dashboards, and preventative feedback loops.
Key Responsibilities- Design & Development
- Develop and maintain telemetry monitoring pipelines and validation frameworks.
- Write and optimize production-grade code (primarily in C#/.NET) for automation of sensor health checks and alerting logic.
- Contribute to architecture decisions and participate in design reviews for telemetry platforms.
- Collaboration & Integration
- Partner with engineering and operations teams to integrate telemetry data sources and ensure system reliability.
- Work closely with downstream teams to improve data usability and support automation/ICMS systems.
- Collaborate with the CDO’s office on procurement-related telemetry data.
- Operations & Problem-Solving
- Troubleshoot telemetry data issues and improve system resilience.
- Introduce system improvements to address evolving needs and ensure data integrity.
- Communicate updates to executives and occasionally brief internal stakeholders.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
- Experience: 7+ years in software development with strong emphasis on distributed systems, telemetry, or observability platforms.
- Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with datacenter operations, IoT telemetry, and cloud infrastructure monitoring.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in C#, .NET or equivalent languages.
- Experience with data pipelines, APIs, and monitoring frameworks.
- Strong debugging and performance optimization skills.
- Preferred: Knowledge of KQL (Kusto Query Language) for telemetry queries.
- Work on mission-critical systems that power Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure.
- Directly impact real-world reliability at hyperscale—your code helps prevent outages and ensures uptime for millions of customers.
- Exposure to cutting-edge technologies in telemetry, automation, and cloud-scale observability.
- Collaborative environment with cross-functional teams driving innovation in datacenter reliability.
- High visibility within CESI and CO+I organizations, with contributions tied to strategic OKRs.
- Delivery of assigned software components and features on time and with high quality.
- Code quality metrics (unit test coverage, adherence to design standards).
- Successful integration of telemetry health checks and alerting logic into production systems.
- Responsiveness to bug fixes and ability to resolve telemetry-related issues promptly.
