Summary of role
We are seeking a Category Manager – Indirect Procurement, a highly strategic role responsible for owning and advancing enterprise-wide category strategies across indirect spend, with a primary focus on R&D, Clinical Operations, Medical Affairs, and Tech Operations (Facilities, Supply Chain, Customer Service, Quality). This role serves as a trusted business partner to senior stakeholders, translating business objectives into category roadmaps that deliver sustainable value through cost optimization, demand management, supplier innovation, and risk mitigation.
The ideal candidate brings strong strategic sourcing and category leadership experience, a deep understanding of indirect procurement levers, and the ability to influence across a complex, matrixed organization. This role goes beyond execution—requiring a forward-looking mindset, strong commercial judgment, and the ability to shape procurement strategy in a growing, regulated life sciences environment.
This position is based in Massachusetts and requires a presence on-site 3-4 days per week, and open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, own, and execute comprehensive category strategies aligned to near-, mid-, and long-term business objectives, ensuring measurable financial and operational outcomes.
- Act as the primary procurement business partner for assigned functional areas, building strong relationships with senior stakeholders and proactively identifying opportunities to improve cost, service, and risk posture.
- Lead complex strategic sourcing initiatives end-to-end, including spend analysis, market assessment, RFI/RFP development, supplier evaluation, negotiations, and implementation.
- Drive value creation through a balanced focus on cost savings, cost avoidance, demand management, supplier performance improvement, and innovation.
- Establish and manage supplier segmentation models, performance metrics, and governance structures; lead regular business reviews and resolve escalated issues as needed.
- Negotiate commercial terms and pricing structures, working closely with Legal and cross-functional partners to ensure contracts are commercially sound, compliant, and scalable.
- Conduct internal and external market analysis to stay current on industry trends, supply market dynamics, and sourcing best practices relevant to indirect categories.
- Utilize SAP Ariba and related procurement systems for sourcing, contracting, spend analytics, and reporting; support broader procurement enablement and process maturity.
- Ensure adherence to Procurement & Contracting policies, internal controls, and regulatory expectations through training, auditing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to the evolution of the indirect procurement operating model, including tools, processes, KPIs, and change management across the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in indirect procurement, strategic sourcing, and category management, preferably within life sciences, pharmaceuticals, or a regulated manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing and deploying category strategies across complex indirect spend areas.
- Strong commercial acumen with proven negotiation skills in both high- and low-leverage environments.
- Ability to identify, quantify, and report savings and value delivery in alignment with finance and governance standards.
- Solid understanding of contract structures, legal fundamentals, and supplier risk considerations.
- Experience working effectively in matrixed, cross-functional organizations with the ability to influence without authority.
- Proficiency with ERP and procurement systems (SAP Ariba strongly preferred), along with strong spend analytics and data segmentation capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage credibly with senior leaders and external suppliers.
- Proven ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously while driving change and continuous improvement.

The pay range for this position is between $111,000-$185,000 annually.
Actual base pay offered may vary depending on a number of factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience. Employees in this position are eligible for a discretionary performance-based cash incentive, and depending on the level of the role may be eligible for a discretionary annual equity award. Benefits for this position include a comprehensive health benefits package that includes medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage. Other offerings include life and disability benefits, pre-tax accounts, a 401(k) with company contribution, and a variety of other benefits.
