ABOUT THE POSITION

Marin County Detention Health Services provides health care to incarcerated individuals of Marin County within the Adult and Juvenile jail facilities. Detention Health Services is a health care delivery system that is managed by the County of Marin's Health and Human Services Department's, Division of Public Health.

Under direction from the Nursing Service Manager, the Detention Registered Nurse (DRN) is responsible for adult inmate medical care in the County jail. The DRN has the following primary duties:  

  • Screen and assess detainees for medical clearance and acceptance into the facility
  • Assist in initiating, planning, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care and treatment plans in the jail environment
  • Perform health intake exams
  • Administer medications 
  • Triage sick call complaints
  • Administers first aid and immunizations
  • Obtains lab samples and order supplies
  • Create and maintain clinical and inmate records.

The Detention Registered Nurse collaborates with Social Services and Behavioral Health staff, Juvenile Hall custody staff, Probation Officers, and Sheriff staff. 

The Department of Health & Human Services' Division of Public Health has one (1) full-time regular hire position and one (1) part time (0.50 FTE) contingent/temporary hire Detention Registered Nurse position available. ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate:

The ideal candidate has experience working in a high security environment such as, correctional facilities, prisons, or detention health services. The DRN is able to manage complex relationships and collaborate as a member of an interdisciplinary team.   Our ideal candidate has resiliency to work in a stressful and sometimes chaotic environment, excellent judgment and decision-making skills, and effective written and oral communication skills. The DRN understands the psychological factors affecting nursing care within a detention facility and has the skills in performing physical and psycho-social nursing assessments. The ideal candidate has demonstrated proficiency utilizing an electronic medical record system to document medication delivery and patient treatment information, is proficient with MS Office (e.g., email, internet, Word) and databases, and adept to learning new programs. 


QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of:
  • Nursing principles, practices and techniques, including assessment, patient care planning and delivery, patient education and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Medical terminology and equipment.
  • Principles and techniques of drug administration, and uses and effects of medications.
  • Principles, practices and techniques of safety and infection control.
  • Laws, rules and regulations governing the practice of nursing.
  • Security issues and challenges of care delivery within a correctional institution.
  • Community medical and social agencies and resources.
  • Environmental, sociological and psychological problems affecting nursing care within a detention facility.
  • Child and elder abuse and neglect and domestic violence reporting laws.

Ability to:
  • Exercise security precautions and safety procedures.
  • Perform physical and psycho-social nursing assessments and develop and implement patient care plans and/or referrals.
  • Administer medications and perform skilled nursing treatments and procedures in a high-security setting for dysfunctional, stressed and/or uncooperative patients.
  • Apply teaching principles and provide education and counseling.
  • Exercise sound independent judgment within scope of authority and practice.
  • Prepare and maintain organized, detailed and accurate medical records.
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the effects of culture and ethnic background on health issues.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed below. Typically, equivalent to one year of professional nursing experience, and the education necessary to practice nursing.

Certificates and Licenses
  • Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse license. 
  • Possession of a current CPR certificate.

Special Requirements 
Must pass a background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Department.

LiveScan:
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff's Department and must pass a Department of Justice LiveScan background check prior to appointment.

BACKGROUND PROCESSApplicants successful in testing will be subject to a thorough and rigorous background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, a criminal records check, interviews with friends, relatives, neighbors and employers; verification of DMV records; and overall employment and education history. An applicant may be disqualified for past criminal convictions, poor driving record, providing false background information, and other reasons. 

DRUG USE STANDARDSNo use of illegal drugs within the timelines described in the Pre-Employment Drug Use Guidelines. Applicants successful in testing will be given a polygraph examination and/or computerized voice stress analysis and will be asked about illegal drug use.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
