Diagnostic Medical Sonographer I

Job Description

Job Summary:
Under medical direction of Physician, performs diagnostic ultrasonographic procedures. Provides quality patient care for assigned patients.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as requested by referring physicians. Selects proper transducer frequency and diameter for performance of exam. Utilizes ancillary devices to obtain hard copy records of exams.

  • Knowledge of using the PACS (Picture Archive and Communications System) and knowledge of the Radiology Information System. Recognizes electronic equipment limitations. Recognizes significance of all structures visualized sonographically.

  • Determines artifacts as well as normal or abnormal anatomy. Differentiates normal and pathological processes and extends scope of studies appropriate to comprehensive final study. Remains able to deviate from normal techniques when necessary to provide wider latitude of visualization.

  • Collaborates with referring physicians to plan or arrange most appropriate studies. Participates in reading sessions with physicians and contributes technical and professional knowledge to final diagnostic impression or report.

  • Provides technical and nursing aid for surgical biopsy and aspiration procedures. Performs calibrations and adjustments of ultrasound equipment.

  • Receives patients, verifies patients identity and explains and prepares patient for procedure.

  • Provides for patient privacy, mental and physical comfort and safety while in department.

  • Correlates patients clinical history with test to be performed. Consults with radiologist after reviewing data, determines appropriate ultrasound procedure.

  • Remains knowledgeable and current regarding technological advances in field of diagnostic medical sonography. Perpetuates self development and education. Performs any related tasks which ensure high quality health care delivery. Promotes and maintains productive and harmonious inter- and intra-departmental working relations.

Basic Qualifications: Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year of post graduate experience.

Education
  • Post high school coursework and graduate from approved Radiology training program recognized by CAHEA; or equivalent related experience.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate
Additional Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, interpersonal relations and customer service.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum one (1) year of clinical radiology experience.
  • Associates degree in related field.
