The Director of Preconstruction is responsible for leading and overseeing the preconstruction function across a portfolio of projects, ensuring consistent delivery of scope, budget, schedule, and risk alignment prior to construction execution. This role combines technical expertise, strategic leadership, and cross-functional coordination to translate Nextpower’s products and services into executable design and construction solutions.

The Director of Preconstruction provides senior-level guidance to preconstruction teams, drives standardization and continuous improvement of preconstruction processes, and serves as a key partner to Sales, Engineering, Foundations, Construction, and external stakeholders. This position plays a critical role in optimizing customer outcomes, improving financial predictability, and ensuring projects transition smoothly from development into construction.

Key Objectives

Ensure Construction Readiness

Deliver fully aligned scope, budget, schedule, and execution strategies prior to construction handoff, reducing downstream risk and change.

Drive Financial Predictability

Establish accurate budgets, assumptions, and cost controls to support strong project financial performance and informed decision-making.

Lead and Develop High-Performing Teams

Build, mentor, and retain a strong cross functional preconstruction team while fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Enhance Customer and Stakeholder Confidence

Provide clear, consistent leadership and communication to customers and partners throughout the preconstruction phase.

Grow Foundations and Specialized Services

Expand Foundations Services and related offerings to increase customer value and associated revenue opportunities.

Core Responsibilities

Preconstruction Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide senior leadership of the preconstruction phase across multiple projects, ensuring a consistent, high-quality, customer experience and seamless transition to construction.
  • Establish and maintain alignment of scope, budget, and schedule, ensuring projects are construction-ready prior to handoff.
  • Oversee the development, review, and approval of initial project budgets, scope definitions, assumptions, and budget trend logs.
  • Direct the creation and management of project schedules and key milestones, holding preconstruction teams accountable to commitments.
  • Monitor and report on key preconstruction performance metrics and project success factors.

Design, Engineering & Technical Coordination

  • Ensure design documents align with execution strategies, constructability requirements, and commercial objectives.
  • Lead the resolution of complex technical design, engineering, and specification issues during preconstruction.
  • Oversee bid strategy, bid packages, and contract manuals to ensure consistency with project goals and company standards.
  • Ensure all regulatory approvals, permits, and jurisdictional requirements necessary for construction are identified, coordinated, and secured.

Foundations & Specialized Services

  • Provide leadership and accountability for the Pile Loading Testing program, including scope, budget, schedule, and customer deliverables.
  • Serve as the senior point of contact for the NX Foundations business with Sales, owners, engineers, and trade partners during the preconstruction phase.

Sales & Customer Engagement

  • Partner with the Sales team to support pursuit strategy, proposal development, and customer presentations.
  • Serve as a senior advisor to customers during the preconstruction phase, reinforcing confidence in Nextpower’s technical and execution capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Sales team in the contracting process with the Customer
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across diverse organizational levels.

People Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop preconstruction managers and team members to support long-term organizational capability and succession planning.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, set expectations, and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable team environment with clear roles, responsibilities, and communication pathways.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Support project and departmental financial objectives through disciplined budgeting, forecasting, and cost management.
  • Identify risks, opportunities, and value-engineering options during preconstruction to optimize project outcomes.
  • Promote standardization, best practices, and continuous improvement across preconstruction processes.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in preconstruction, project development, construction management, or related roles.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership or management experience overseeing complex projects or teams.
  • Experience in utility-scale solar, renewable energy, or large-scale infrastructure projects strongly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of preconstruction processes, cost estimating, scheduling, constructability, and risk management.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and execution plans.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage senior leaders, customers, and technical teams.
  • Financial & Business Acumen
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs between cost, schedule, risk, and quality.
  • Organizational & Strategic Skills
  • Strong prioritization and decision-making skills with the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.

Pay is based on market location and may vary based on factors including experience, skills, education and other job-related reasons. The annual salary range for this position is $215,000.00-$230,000.00. (Applicable to California)
