Job Description

ABOUT SLATE

At Slate, we’re building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love—and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Dimensional Controls Engineer to join our BIW team. This role is critical in ensuring the dimensional quality of BIW assemblies, supporting new product launches, and driving continuous improvement in manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in dimensional engineering, metrology, and automotive manufacturing, with a passion for electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing technologies.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO:

  • Lead and manage dimensional control activities for BIW assemblies, ensuring all body structures meet stringent dimensional specifications and quality standards throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain advanced measurement systems (CMM, laser trackers, 3D scanning, etc.) for BIW components and assemblies. Oversee calibration, MSA, and ongoing validation of metrology equipment.

  • Analyze dimensional data, identify trends, and drive root cause analysis for any deviations. Implement corrective and preventive actions in collaboration with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams.

  • Support new model launches by developing dimensional control plans, conducting capability studies, and validating tooling and fixtures for BIW. Participate in design reviews to ensure manufacturability and dimensional robustness.

  • Work closely with design, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to resolve dimensional issues, optimize processes, and ensure seamless integration of BIW components.

  • Develop and maintain dimensional control documentation, including control plans, inspection procedures, and quality manuals. Ensure compliance with industry standards (AIAG, IATF 16949, etc.).

  • Collaborate with suppliers to define and monitor dimensional requirements for incoming BIW parts. Support supplier development and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Drive continuous improvement projects focused on dimensional quality, process capability, and cost reduction. Leverage Six Sigma, Lean, and other quality tools.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to team members and production staff on dimensional control best practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned related to BIW dimensional quality and metrology.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM:

High integrity, curiosity, and resourcefulness. Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Strong teamwork, assertiveness, and a results-oriented mindset. Commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related field).

  • 5+ years’ experience in dimensional engineering, metrology, or quality within automotive BIW or related manufacturing.

  • Proven expertise in CMM programming, 3D measurement systems, and GD&T.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; experience with root cause analysis and corrective action.

  • Familiarity with automotive quality standards (AIAG, IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, MSA, SPC).

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work cross-functionally.

  • Proficiency in quality management systems and data analysis software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or certifications (Six Sigma, ASQ, etc.).

  • Experience with electric vehicle BIW processes and lightweight materials (aluminum, composites).

  • Experience launching new vehicle programs in a fast-paced environment.

About Slate Auto

At Slate, we’ve got one job: building a vehicle you’ll fall in love with, right here in the USA.

We believe that car buyers—not car companies—should call the shots.

We like looking at a road, not a screen.

We don’t like paying for stuff we don’t need.

We like picking out the stuff we do need.

We think dings are badges, not blemishes.

But we know not everyone likes what we like.

So, we built you a Slate: you make it yours.
