Summary

We are filling two (2) career service positions. We may use this recruitment to create a list of candidates for any potential vacancies in similar positions within the next 12 months.                                                                                                                                                                 

This is a fantastic opportunity for those who thrive in a collaborative environment with smart, talented, and diverse team members. You will directly contribute to protecting the environmental health of closed landfills and surrounding communities by monitoring air and water quality and ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations. As part of a team comprising of scientists, geologists, and engineers, including Engineer II and Engineer III positions; you will receive mentorship in environmental investigations, contract management, and project management. With the unit not yet fully staffed, the experience you gain could open pathways to Engineer II level roles once the team reaches full capacity.

About the Role:
This position plays a vital role in the division, which collects over 1,000 samples annually. While much of the lab data is provided electronically, about half of your time will be spent on data entry, review, correction, and validation. Key responsibilities include:

  • Data entry for all water, soil, and air samples collected by environmental scientists and analyzed by the King County Environmental Lab.
  • Assisting with site engineering for all closed landfills.
  • Inspecting closed landfills for asset condition assessment.

The Landfill Engineering, Geology, and Environmental Data (LEGEND) unit is a small, dedicated team focused on improving the environmental health of closed landfills to safeguard our neighbors' health and safety. Our team of scientists, engineers, and geologists brings unique and essential expertise to the successful maintenance and monitoring of these sites.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing: 

  • Data entry, validation, and exceedance reporting
  • Assistance with hydrogeologic evaluations
  • Assistance with annual and quarterly reporting
  • Site inspections
  • Review of environmental investigation deliverables

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Experience using EarthSoft Equis software for data entry              
  • Knowledge in how to perform quality review of analytical laboratory operating procedures and methodologies relevant to aquatic chemistry.
  • Ability to analyze or review various technical landfill related engineering elements, including environmental controls and monitoring systems independently.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse group of professionals, coworkers, and public.
  • Intermediate knowledge and experience using Microsoft (MS) Excel, and MS-Word.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary collaborative team settings and to actively engage in the development of project designs.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across different work groups and with senior level managers, supervisors, technical leads and operations staff. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a rapidly evolving work environment that requires multi-tasking, planning, and organizing work daily, responding to changing priorities and tight deadlines, and grasping and responding to complex issues quickly.
  • Knowledge of the databases used for storing technical information such as landfill gas, groundwater, surface water, leachate or other environmental systems performance data.

It Would Be Great If You Also Bring: 
  • Expert knowledge in the use of Equis to enter data and create data reports.
  • Experience providing consultant and contractor invoice approval in PRISM database.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  • Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements typically 1-2 days per quarter. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department's vision of Green Where We Work.   
  • Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.  
  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. 
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Protec Local 17.
