Environmental Permitting & Siting Engineer

Job Summary

This position will report to the Permitting and Siting team in the Environmental Affairs and Sustainability (EA&S) Department.  The Environmental Permitting & Siting Engineer will support Southern Company’s operating companies (OPCOs) Environmental Affairs organizations with issues related to environmental permitting, generation siting, and compliance. Responsibilities will include leading multi-media environmental regulatory evaluations and permitting, Clean Air Act air permitting, environmental compliance support, and due diligence activities for new and existing electric generating units. This position will also engage in other areas of EA&S and employees across numerous functional areas, including Technical Shared Services, legal (internal & external), Research and Development, Fuels, Planning, Commercial Operations, and external consultants. 

Job Requirements

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or relevant scientific discipline from an accredited 4-year college required
  • Master’s degree and professional certificates in related field desired
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) desired
  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental permitting or compliance is required 
  • Project leadership experience required 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in Clean Air Act permitting required.
  • Experience in water and wastewater permitting desired.
  • Knowledge of federal/state environmental regulations and compliance requirements for air, land or water media 
  • Familiar with power generation, plant operations and emission control technologies desired
  • Strong project management and organizational skills for effective project outcomes required
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making abilities required
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex topics both orally and written
  • Ability to take initiative, think strategically, and solve problems with strong customer focus
  • Strong interpersonal skills for relationship building and effective teamwork with diverse disciplines and backgrounds and across organizations 
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Working knowledge of PivotTables, macros, VBA and SQL is desired

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead Clean Air Act environmental permit application and supporting documentation preparation for existing, new and modified emission sources 
  • Oversee and manage consultants for due diligence activities, air dispersion modeling projects, and permit applications
  • Lead regulatory applicability, emissions calculations, and permitting strategy activities
  • Provide environmental support for generation siting, generation development and business development functions
  • Lead or assist environmental due diligence reviews of potential new generation technologies, new generation sites, and mergers and acquisitions 
  • Support other department activities including environmental reporting, strategy, and policy development
