Federal Energy Regulatory Associate (FERC)

Job Description

The Washington, D.C. office of McGuireWoods seeks an associate to join its Chambers-Ranked Federal Energy Regulatory practice. 

The FERC team sits within McGuireWoods’ Regulatory & Compliance department, which handles all aspects of regulation and regulatory compliance – regulatory approvals, permitting, siting, enforcement defense, rulemaking, legislation, mergers and acquisitions, project development, crisis management, and agency liaison, at federal, state and local levels.

The McGuireWoods Federal Energy Regulatory team practices primarily before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and focuses on regulatory agencies, regulatory policy and regulated industries in the electricity and natural gas sectors.  Our lawyers focus on all aspects regarding the regulation of a wide range of electric power and natural gas industry participants, including investor-owned utilities, independent transmission and generation developers, and energy traders.  We advise clients regarding market-based and cost-of service formula and stated rate regulation and compliance, transmission, interconnection, electric market design, and Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) issues. 

Our lawyers assist clients with regulatory compliance, rate-related filings, litigation before FERC, and counsel clients on energy regulatory aspects of transactions for the financing, development, acquisition and disposition of energy/utility assets.  Along with excellent benefits, McGuireWoods offers our attorneys a competitive salary with hours and merit bonus opportunities, billable hours credit for pro bono work, and a hybrid in office/remote option allowing flexibility and work-life balance.

Salary: $235,000 - $310,000

Qualified candidates must have 2-4 years of experience with Federal electric regulation, ideally in:


  • FPA Section 203 and transaction-related filings, compliance and due diligence, market based rates and related compliance, cost of service ratemaking, and/or organized energy markets.  
  • Excellent academic credentials and demonstrated writing skills.
  • A proven track record of demonstrating initiative and independent working skills within a group setting.
  • DC bar membership, or the ability to waive into the DC bar.
  • Please submit a cover letter, resume, transcript, and writing sample.

 The ideal candidate will have experience practicing before FERC, a working grasp of FERC’s e-filing and e-Tariff systems and/or MBR database, and experience related to the regulatory aspects of FERC-jurisdictional transactions.
