GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

As the Head of Live Arts, you will be responsible for overseeing the dynamic Live Arts Department, which promotes a multiplicity of genres, including classical, folk, global, and popular music, and commissions and presents new works of performance, including music, movement, sound, related hybrids, and site-specific commissions. You will be responsible for bringing this diverse program to life throughout the Museum's galleries and public spaces, Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, and virtually, in hybrid manifestations and online.

The Head of Live Arts plays a vital role in supporting the Museum's mission of fostering appreciation and understanding of art by closely connecting performance to the full range of the Museum's universal collections and exhibitions. You will oversee all departmental activities, such as personnel management, production planning, budgeting and forecasting, marketing, and fundraising, including the oversight of an important donor support group for the department, the Firebirds.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Audience Engagement, who oversees a departmental group responsible for the Museum's audience-facing content, programming, and promotions you will work closely with partners within the Audience Engagement umbrella (Digital, Education, Marketing, Publications, Imaging, and Libraries) and across the organization including Curatorial, Development, Membership, Special Events, VX, Communications, Finance, and more, to support Audience Engagement's vision to connect audiences to art, ideas, and one another to make the Museum relevant, welcoming, and accessible for all.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Bring a strong conceptual vision for the research, presentation, and execution of an innovative and cohesive array of performances that uplift The Met's exhibitions and collections, champion diverse artists and voices, and utilize galleries and public areas in and around the Museum as performance spaces.

  • Oversee the execution of 50+ performances annually from start to finish, including ideation, planning, budgeting, fundraising, marketing, and production phases, in collaboration with colleagues in Curatorial (with special partnerships with the Musical Instruments and Modern and Contemporary departments), Digital, Education, Communications, and other partners as required.

  • Lead and motivate a diverse team of staff, interns, fellows and vendors. Provide professional training and opportunities for growth and advancement.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships to donors, supporters, scholars, artists, and performers.

  • Actively work to attract new, diverse audiences through a commitment to utilizing hybrid and remote technologies and by maintaining deep and lasting relationships with partners and audiences across the five boroughs.

  • Spearhead and establish partnerships or other relationships with New York City's cultural institutions to co-organize programs where appropriate, to cross-promote offerings, and to develop new audiences.

  • Strategically analyze the profit/loss potential of individual programs to ensure achievement of annual revenue targets within a self-sustaining, mission-driven program.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MA or PhD in Arts Administration, Performance Art, Art History, or equivalent experience required

  • Ten years' experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities required.

  • Demonstrated experience managing large staff and resources, including vendors and union staff.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and seasoned management skills, with a track record in supervising people, operations and budgets for an institution known for excellence in the arts and/or education with a strong audience development component and deep connections in the performance world.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and present large-scale, hybrid performances required.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEIA) in the field.

  • Possess exceptional external and internal relationship-building skills and an excellent network, great relationships with donors and collectors, and strong working relationships with other experts in the field.

  • Understanding of appropriate standards for technology and equipment used for live and hybrid productions in auditorium and other settings.

  • Command of Microsoft Office Suite, digital learning platforms, and a variety of digital technologies.

  • Large-scale project management a plus.

  • Some evening and weekend hours required.

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $230,000.00 - $250,000.00 / Annually

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.
