Jr Radiation Protection Technician - Plant Farley

Requirements:
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or Physical Science (Biology, Microbiology, Physics, Chemistry, or Math) OR associate’s degree in Radiation Protection Technology, Electrical Computer & Engineering Technology, Nuclear Engineering Technology, OR
- US Navy Nuclear ELT in lieu of degree
- Successful completion of the Technical Occupations Selection System (TECH) test.
- Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Summary of Position Duties:
As a Radiation Protection Technician at Plant Farley near Dothan, AL, you will help ensure the occupational radiation safety of plant workers and provide technical support to the Radiation Protection (RP) Department through the following:
- Monitoring Radiation Controlled Area (RCA) on a regularly scheduled basis using fixed and portable survey instruments to evaluate contamination and airborne radiation levels and to assist in establishing dose rates for job coverage
- Storing, issuing, and testing of respiratory protection equipment
- Assisting in repair and calibration of fixed and portable radiation survey instruments when required
- Assisting in providing health physics coverage to plant operations and maintenance personnel to ensure safe radiological practices
- Providing radiological evaluation of area decontamination activity
- Assisting in the preparation of Radiation Work Permits
- Providing support to Farley Nuclear Plant Dosimetry Program, as needed
- Providing support for radioactive waste shipments as required
- Implementing the process control program as required
- Reviewing work packages, projecting exposure for job, evaluating need for shielding, and briefing with technicians and workers on work activities
- Performing As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) job reviews and maintaining a job history file for ALARA packages
- Tracking ALARA suggestions, reviewing and taking necessary action
- Pursuing methods for improving the ALARA program's performance and efficiency and to increase the awareness of all plant groups of this Program
- Photo documentation of plant areas for use in future ALARA job planning
- Serves on the on-shift Emergency Response Organization
- Support the decontamination of plant areas and equipment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- One year of Health Physics or decontamination-related work experience (2000 hours over a minimum of 40 weeks) desired
- Basic knowledge of radiation fundamentals is preferred
- Must perform daily with a safety-focused attitude and commitment to zero accidents or injuries
- The ability to enforce radiation protection standards and requirements and stop work when compliance is jeopardized
- Proficient in the use of a personal computer
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of nuclear power plant procedures, regulations, systems and processes is a plus
- Working knowledge of first aid and heat stress is desired
- Self-motivated with demonstrated leadership and teamwork abilities
- Any applicant accepting this position will be required to meet background screening & security and company physical requirements. Must have capacity to be respirator qualified.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining unit and will pay an hourly rate of $42.13.
