Job Description
Under the direction and oversight of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Manager, or designee, within the scope of Unlicensed Laboratory Personnel as described in B&PC 1269, receives and processes specimens and performs clerical tasks under general supervision of a licensed person as authorized by the California lab law.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Prior to phlebotomy, registers patients and assesses, for age group and other factors. Chooses appropriate phlebotomy technique and determines whether assistance will be required. May be required to draw blood Into computerized systems, enters data such as released test results, patient demographics, physicians name and test requested. Relays results to staff as required. Prepares specimens for testing. Prepares stains and reagents. Process specimens to include receiving, sorting, matching, prioritizing, labeling, and shipping. Cleans and sterilizes equipment and glassware. Maintains printers and faxes, time stamps, and other equipment in the work area. Answers telephones and relays released test results. Registers patients, and collects fees and bills. Gives patients instructions and provides specimen containers. Trains and orients new employees as necessary. Performs other related duties as necessary. Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Grade 235
Basic Qualifications: Experience
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment. Also refer to Position Specifications outlined in the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Education
- High School Diploma/GED. California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (if job requires blood drawing).
