Job Description
This position will be responsible for seeking lighting sales opportunities, designing, engineering, overseeing construction, and supporting large commercial and “greenfield” lighting projects in the 23 Counties that Mississippi Power serves. The North Engineer will cover the 17 Northern counties (Marion, Lamar, Forrest, Perry, Greene, Jefferson Davis, Covington, Jones, Wayne, Smith, Jasper, Clarke, Scott, Newton, Lauderdale, Leake, and Neshoba). The position will be required to live within or near the 17 counties and report to the nearest office location in Hattiesburg, Laurel, or Meridian. The South Engineer will cover the 6 Coastal counties (Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Greene, Pearl River, and Stone). The position will be required to live within or near the 6 counties and report to the office located in Gulfport.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to stay engaged in community developments to proactively generate profitable lighting sales
- Identify lighting sales opportunities and manage opportunity pipeline
- Provide various lighting design layouts and proposals to customers inside and outside of MPC service territory
- Work closely with lighting vendors to provide photometric and material quotes
- Design and estimate major lighting projects using Job Estimating Tracking System (JETS)
- Serve as lead engineer for the Northern lighting team providing voltage calculations, operational technical expertise, training, and support
- Assist lighting lines specialists with effectively coordinating NESC and NEC lighting jobs
- Assist with packaging responses to bid packages for lighting installations
- Attend appropriate industry and system committees and working groups as identified
- Serve as technical interface with other departments
- Assume storm restoration role as needed
Job Experience and Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required
- Minimum 2 years of experience in engineering, design, and construction of distribution electrical system or street and area lighting systems is required
- Industry sales experience is desired
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of distribution equipment (identification of poles, transformers, wire sizes, switches etc.)
- Knowledge and experience in SoCo applications such as JETS, CSS, DistGIS, SOCKET, CAMP and other related engineering software used to prepare lighting workorders
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proven knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code, National Electrical Code, Southern Company Distribution Specifications, MPC Safety Rule Book, MPC O&M Procedures and applicable compliance policies
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to effectively communicate and work well with internal customers and external (Lighting, Power Delivery, customer service, vendors, developers, consultants, city and state agencies and others)
- Proven project management skills involving multiple major projects
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
- Knowledge of distribution material and electrical theory
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on building positive relationships with peers, other departments, and customers
