Network Engineer, Sr.

Location: 

Work from either APC or GPC headquarters. Occasional (day) travel to project locations and corporate headquarters as required. Other Southern Company sites would be considered. 

Purpose:  

The Fixed Wireless Network Engineer is responsible for providing tactical planning, engineering design, process design, automation design, documentation, network device management, equipment lifecycle management, and third-level technical support for the core network infrastructure (DMVPN) and 34k+ fixed wireless (cellular) field routers on Southern Company’s Private LTE network. 

General Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for engineering designs for network infrastructure related to Southern Company’s Fixed wireless router implementation including Cisco core network devices, appliances (AAA, ISE), and GE Orbit LTE field network routers.
  • Responsible for design, implementation and 3rd level support of secured configuration for fixed wireless communication, including Cisco DMVPN infrastructure, IPSec VPNs and certificate management.
  • Responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting the network automation efforts using Python and Ansible, or similar automation and orchestration technologies
  • Responsible for design, implementation and 3rd level support of the automated provisioning process for field network routers
  • Responsible for development of and compliance with engineering standards including documentation, product, lifecycle plans, and design packages.
  • Responsible for coordinating supplemental engineering service providers and/or contractors performing engineering design for network projects.
  • Responsible for providing support to the affiliate Operating Companies on issues related to network planning, engineering design, and engineering consulting.
  • Responsible for developing and participation in the successful completion of Network Engineering and Technology Organization initiatives.
  • Responsible for providing third-level maintenance (reactive, preventative, and quality assurance) support as well as backup maintenance /installation coverage related to the identified networks at specific Southern Company locations.
  • Perform on-call duties per schedule

Job Requirements:

  • Experienced knowledge of telecommunications systems and data network systems including IP addressing and naming (DNS, DHCP), Internet, Firewalls, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), LAN switching, Core Network switching and network routing protocols including OSPF and BGP.
  • Hands on experience with Python and Ansible.
  • Cellular router experience in configuration and troubleshooting related with connectivity and private APN assignments
  • Basic understanding of cellular wireless technology (routers, IoT, APN’s, antennas, RF, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Network Management systems, e.g. HPNA, GE PulseNet is a plus
  • SD-WAN and/or S.A.S.E. knowledge and/or experience
  • Cloud architecture experience is a plus
  • Experience with Operations Technologies (OT) and Real-Time SCADA systems is a plus
  • Experience with Palo Alto Firewalls is a plus
  • Advanced network troubleshooting and network protocol analysis (e.g. WireShark) skills are a plus 
  • Demonstrated personal computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, Visio, etc.)
  • Ability to effectively organize tasks, manage multiple priorities/details, meet schedules, and deliver on customer commitments
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Effective oral and written communications skills with the ability to convey complex technical issues in business terms.

 Education / Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred); Computer Science, MIS, or technical degree in Computer Science or related technology is acceptable 
  • Minimum of 8 years of Data Network Experience with Cisco Routing/Switching and firewalls
  • Cisco certifications are a plus

This position falls under the company’s Insider Threat Program and will have access to, and control over sensitive data, systems or assets. Enhanced personnel screening, which includes a background review, drug screen and psychological assessment, will be required if you are selected for this position
