The University Hospital Outpatient Physical Therapy team is in the heart of the main University of Michigan Hospital. We serve a diverse patient population, including U-M staff and faculty, students, as well as the broader community. Our clinic specializes in treating spine/orthopedic conditions, TMJ dysfunction, balance/falls, and vestibular disorders. We support a collaborative, growth-oriented environment where patient access and high-quality care is our top priority.

Responsibilities*

  • Interpret referrals and ensure necessary precautions are identified so that appropriate physical therapy evaluation and treatment can be provided.
  • Develop focused individually designed treatment plans based on the patient?s functional goals.
  • Utilizes independent clinical decision making to progress patients and modify treatment depending upon the patient?s needs and medical status.
  • Monitor patients throughout the provision of treatment and respond appropriately to changes in patient status.
  • Collaborate with a PTA to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Instruct patients and their families in home treatment programs.
  • Document patient evaluation, treatment and discharge status clearly, concisely, and in a timely manner.
  • Stay current with best practices and continuing education in physical therapy.
  • May conduct research under the guidance of a Physical Therapy Director.
  • May conduct special projects contributing to teaching materials and procedures used in physical therapy.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • If licensed prior to 2016: Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy or basic MS
  • If licensed on or after 2016: Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy (DPT)
  • Completion of an accredited Physical Therapy Program and Clinical Internship
  • Current licensure as a Physical Therapist in the State of Michigan
  • This position requires Primary Source Verification

Desired Qualifications*

  • Demonstrated proficiency in patient care and treatment
  • Passion for rehabilitation and helping patients regain independence
  • Collaborative mindset and positive attitude to contribute to a high-performing multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Outpatient experience treating patients with general orthopedic, spine, acute and chronic conditions, non-neurologic balance/falls, and temporomandibular dysfunctions
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Coverage of same-day appointments and open/close clinic schedule hours 

Work Schedule

Full-time (40 hours/week). Specific hours are to be determined.
Clinic Hours: Monday-Friday 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM 

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Application Deadline

Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar days.  The review and selection process may begin as early as the eighth day after posting. This opening may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended.
