Summary:
The Hospital Police Lieutenant is responsible for overseeing a campus operation or a specific unit within the department, ensuring the safety and security of hospital staff, patients, and visitors. This role includes supervising personnel, managing daily operations, and coordinating law enforcement responses to emergencies and incidents. The Lieutenant enforces policies and procedures, collaborates with hospital leadership, and develops strategies to enhance security and public safety. Additionally, they provide training, monitor compliance with regulations, and support the professional development of officers under their command.

This position is eligible for a $15,000 commitment incentive spread over a two-year period.

Responsibilities:
1.  Provide direct management and supervision for patrol squads supervisors, the Criminal Investigations Unit, the Training Unit or other units as assigned, ensuring professional practices that support efficient and effective law enforcement and public safety services within the healthcare system.
2. Review officers’ reports of activities and incidents responded to and/or investigated ensuring completeness, thoroughness, and accuracy of detail.
3. Assists in development of and maintains familiarity with pertinent policies and procedures for the department and UNC Hospitals to include the departmental manual, UNC Hospitals Administrative Policy Manual, the Environmental, Health, and Safety Manual, and the Human Resources Policy Manual.
4. Assists and coordinates activities of outside law enforcement agencies and forensic staff involved in providing security for prisoners, as well as other investigations relating to patient, staff, and visitors.
5. Is knowledgeable of hospital incident command procedures and disaster plans and deploys Hospitals Police personnel as appropriate in an emergent situation.
6. Assumes responsibility as the initial UNC Hospitals Incident Commander, until properly relieved.
7. Addresses and resolves all personnel concerns in a proactive and timely manner, including performance evaluations, corrective actions, HR policy compliance, and other required annual training.
8. Ensure adequate squad or unit staffing through effective scheduling and time management
9. Conduct regular roll-call trainings that include, but are not limited to, the following topics: recent court decisions, legal updates, and officer safety and awareness issues.
10. Evaluate career development paths for staff and identify training opportunities to enhance leadership skills and operational effectiveness.
11. May be responsible for ensuring thorough training of new personnel to include management and oversight of the FTO, In-service, and ongoing training functions.

Education Requirements:
● Requires completion of an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
● Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Requires five (5) years of progressive sworn law enforcement officer experience, with at least (two) 2 years of the experience requirement in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater.
● Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires.
