Power System Coordinator (Transmission System Operator) - ACC
A Power System Coordinator has the ultimate responsibility and accountability for the integrity of Alabama Power Company's (APC) electrical transmission system by making critical decisions regarding system operations while keeping the Bulk Power System safe and reliable. Additional responsibilities include:
- Manage and direct field employees in performing switching operations.
- Monitor and operate the Network Transmission/Sub Transmission systems and other transmission lines and facilities.
- Assess operating situations.
- Coordinate generation resources and operate hydro resources.
Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Graduate or Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution OR
- Technical certificate/Associate’s degree OR
- Extensive experience in transmission system operations including construction (lines or subs), maintenance (lines or subs), and/or protection & control.
- Current work experience within APC Power Delivery is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Working knowledge and/or experience in the construction, maintenance, operation, or protection and control of APC's Generating and Transmission electric system.
- Knowledge of protective relays, relaying schemes, and control systems.
- Must be capable of managing stressful situations
- Ability to multi-task and competently manage work with constantly changing priorities and minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of division/district organization and distribution operations.
- Detailed understanding of electric system operation, theory, and practices.
- Working knowledge of hydro generation plant operations and reservoir management.
- Adaptability to the rigors of shift work.
Required Certification(s) and Initial Training:
- Comprehension of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards will be required for certification of APC’s Power System Coordinators.
- Successful candidate must:
- Currently possess an active certification from NERC in the areas of Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator, or
- Successfully complete the rigorous national technical examination administered by NERC in the areas of Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator within one year of being awarded this position.
- Successfully complete internal new-hire training and be deemed qualified to assume operational shift within one year of being awarded this position.

- Exercise effective authority to call out employees for overtime, as necessary.
Other Requirements:
- The successful candidate will be awarded the job only after the successful completion of the NERC CIP and Insider Threat Program requirements.
- Due to the significant investment in your training, the time it takes to become proficient, and the critical nature of this role, we request your commitment to work in the ACC for a minimum of 24 months.
