The role:

Join our Statewide Project Delivery Branch’s Construction Section as a quality assurance technician in Portland! In this role, you will test construction materials for projects throughout the region in the field and in the laboratory. You will help our agency confirm the quality of the materials placed on construction projects and work with other certified material technicians to ensure proper testing policy and procedures are followed. At times, you may also participate in research on materials testing to support improvements in procedures, specifications and policy related to construction materials. Apply today!

A day in the life:

  • Perform complex and specialized tests on construction materials.

  • Evaluate test results for compliance with specifications and recommend acceptance, rejection or alternative uses of construction materials.

  • Maintain records of received material samples and test results.

  • Conduct research testing on materials.

  • Maintain, repair and calibrate laboratory and field-testing machines and equipment.

  • Drive a passenger vehicle to get test samples at production facilities or project work locations.

  • Review contractor quality control programs.

  • Inspect contractor’s production facilities, laboratories and equipment at various locations throughout the region.

  • At random observe, verify proper certifications, monitor and counsel contractor’s technicians in their performance to promote accuracy and adherence to proper testing procedures.

  • Work is primarily performed outside and around traffic and construction equipment hazards.

  • Must be able to drive a car for long periods and in all weather conditions.

  • Duties involve working with hazardous chemicals, equipment and radioactive sources.

  • May be required to frequently lift and carry up to or over 60 pounds.

  • Subject to being on call 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays.

Minimum qualifications:

Five and one-half years (66 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.

OR

An associate's degree in engineering technology from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and four years of experience directly related to engineering.

OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience (such as a bachelor’s degree in engineering plus two and one-half years’ engineering experience).

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

The following will be required within six months after hire:

  • Radiation Safety Training certification

  • ODOT training certifications:

    • Certified Aggregate Technician (CAgT)

    • Certified Embankment Technician (CEBT)

    • Quality Control Technician (QCT)

    • Certified Density Technician (CDT)

    • Certified Asphalt Technician (CAT-1)

  • Currently possess one or more of the following certifications:

    • Radiation Safety Training certification

    • ODOT training certifications:

      • Certified Asphalt Technician (CAT-1)

  • Strong knowledge of mathematics and highway construction procedures and practices.

  • Experience training, providing technical guidance, and assigning and reviewing the work of others.

  • Ability to act independently and solve problems in the interest of ODOT, even when no authority is present.

  • Knowledge of computer word processing, spreadsheet and document handling programs.

  • This position will receive a cost of living adjustment (COLA) increase of 6.55% which is not reflected in the salary listed in this posting. The effective date of the increase is Jan. 1, 2025, for Feb. 1, 2025, paychecks.

  • We do not offer visa sponsorship. If you are hired, you will be required to fill out the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form confirming you are able to work in the US.
