Renewables Project Engineer OR Engineering Analyst (SPC Renewable Energy O&M)
Job Summary
This role is responsible for managing major capital and O&M projects for the SPC Renewable Fleet, providing technical expertise to improve reliability, driving fleet-wide standardization, and supporting acquisitions and development through risk assessment and O&M contract negotiation. Primary responsibilities include:
Project Management
- Lead all phases of large capital and O&M projects - from initiation to completion - including design, budgeting, scheduling, and execution.
- Develop business cases for new projects and assess their impact, collaborating with SPC’s Project Analysis & Market Assessment (PAMA) team as necessary.
- Develop and manage the five-year capital budget and plan.
- Support the SPC Budget Analyst with invoice reconciliation, accruals, variance explanations, and projections.
- Lead contract management and administration processes to support successful project delivery and maintain compliance.
- Drive service requests and team coordination for successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects
- Facilitate clear and consistent communication and collaboration among Southern Company Services resources, contractors, vendors, Renewable O&M Asset Managers, and site stakeholders
- Support the evaluation and implementation of SPC’s self-perform transitions.
- Conduct cost-benefit analyses to inform project prioritization.
Technical Support
- Perform technical analyses, feasibility studies, and risk assessments to guide strategic decisions.
- Develop clear technical reports and presentations for management and stakeholders.
- Deliver technical solutions that maximize facility availability, reliability, and performance.
- Lead root cause investigations of major events and equipment failures with cross functional teams to ensure timely resolution.
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation.
- Recommend and implement improvements that enhance site performance and operational efficiency.
Fleet Strategy & Standardization
- Drive fleet-wide adoption of standardization, best practices, and strategic initiatives to ensure consistency and operational excellence.
- Develop and implement maintenance strategies that optimize reliability, reduce downtime, and extend asset life.
Acquisition & Development Support
- Contribute to project teams evaluating operational and financial risks for acquisitions, development projects, and repowers.
- Perform O&M contract development of renewable facilities targeted for repower, acquisition, or development by SPC.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure smooth integration of acquired assets, new developments, and repower projects.
This position is primarily located in Birmingham, AL but can also be located at any SPC owned renewable facility. Overnight travel is required to renewable facilities located in various parts of the United States including, but not limited to Georgia, West Virginia, Texas, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Maine, Washington, California, New Mexico, and Kansas.
Job Requirements
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology preferred
Experience
Job experience in the following areas is required:
- Minimum of 3 years of power plant operations and maintenance, project engineering, financial modeling, or asset management, preferably in renewables
- Management of multiple medium to large scale projects, ensuring successful execution from planning to through completion.
- Contract administration and management
Job experience in the following areas is strongly preferred:
- Budget development and management, cost control, and financial forecasting
- Interpreting operational data – PI or OIS experience a plus
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings (P&ID drawings, single lines, etc.)
- Creating and presenting business case justifications for projects and investments
- Regulatory filings and compliance in the energy sector
Other relevant experience includes:
- Power plant design and construction
- Generation development
- Utility system planning
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Self-starter with strong organizational skills; able to prioritize, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
