Responsibilities*

  • As a senior lab member, provide functional oversight to all aspects of the daily research lab operations in collaboration with the PI.  Coordinating the design, execution, and outcome assessment of new research projects and the establishment of lab procedures and protocols
  • Mentor students, junior scientists, and lab members in the academic methods of scientific analysis and research project design
  • Training users and lab members in equipment and lab techniques.  Acting as a liaison with other labs, departments, and programs for acquiring data and services related to the research projects
  • Patient bio specimen processing (skin, cells, blood, urine)
  • Generation and maintenance of a biobank of patient samples
  • Performing common laboratory assays with patient samples (RNA isolation, immunohistochemistry, real-time PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays)
  • Coordinating the summary and analysis of collected experimental data.  Generating independent projects of interest with existing patient biosamples and subsequent manuscripts and presentation of work

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor?s degree in the natural or physical sciences
  • 6 or more years of laboratory experience in a research setting with proven record in independent development of research experiments and participation of research publications
  • Supervisory and financial management experience required
  • Proven experience in providing oversight to all aspects of the day-to-day operations of a research lab, including training of lab members in lab techniques and equipment operations
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of our team
  • Excellent attendance, ability to prioritize appropriately and exercise good judgment  
  • Compliance with University research policies and procedures

Desired Qualifications*

  • Proven experience in performance of standard laboratory procedures and molecular biology techniques
  • Master's degree or professional/Doctorate degree in natural or physical sciences 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and proficiency or ability to learn EndNote reference manager, Graphpad data analysis software, and FlowJo flow cytometry analysis software

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
