Summary:
As a Lab Assistant, you will help prepare, maintain, and operate medical and surgical equipment while also assisting faculty, staff, and trainees during educational sessions. This position supports learners from
multiple disciplines within the School of Medicine, UNC Health System, and external healthcare industry and training partners.
Responsibilities:
Simulation Setup & Support
-Prepare equipment, tools, and supplies for surgical and clinical drill-based sessions-Assist with the setup and takedown of training scenarios and ensure equipment is functioning properly
-Set up/Operate manikins, surgical trainers, and audio-visual systems during sessions as needed
-Provide technical support to instructors and learners during training events
-Assist with variable needs for the High-Fidelity Model (Cadaver) Curriculum
Lab Maintenance & Inventory
-Maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab space-Perform basic equipment troubleshooting and routine maintenance
-Monitor inventory and restock supplies as needed
-Ensure all equipment and materials are stored securely and ready for use
Instructional & Program Support
-Assist instructors in demonstrating equipment and procedural techniques-Support scheduling and coordination of lab activities
-Help develop instructional materials and propose philanthropic opportunities
-Participate in promotional and outreach activities, such as lab tours, classroom to career events, STEM and GME/CME events
*Preferences:
Prefer candidates who have surgical scrub experience and comfort in working with cadavers.
Other Information
Education Requirements:
● Associate’s degree in a related field (surgical tech, nursing, biomedical engineering, radiation technician or similar) preferred
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Three (3) years of surgical or clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on lab/technical experience
● Minimally Invasive Surgery and Davinci Robot Experience a Plus
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● • Knowledge of surgical tools, anatomy, and clinical procedures
• Comfortable working with simulation equipment and AV/tech systems
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal communication and teamwork
• Ability to maneuver and lift lab equipment
• Motivated Self-Starter
• Autodidact
