Job Description

Job Summary

Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, maintains turf equipment and power tools to maximize safety and productivity. Utilizes department tools, facilities, and resources to effect repairs, replacements, and upgrades of new and existing equipment, as well as to perform routine maintenance on turf equipment to maximize safety, resource life and value. Provides emergency response and on-call service for in-field repairs to minimize production interruptions (tires, blades, jump-starts, tools, etc.). Conducts seasonal maintenance of equipment, following manufacturer’s guidelines and specifications. Ensures all safety equipment operates according to specifications, with the goal of maximizing equipment service life, in-service availability and safety. Assists with maintaining inventory of repair parts. Pursues ongoing education in the field of turf and safety equipment, to stay abreast of changes and evolution within the industry.

  • Perform Small Engine Equipment Repairs: Maintain turf equipment and power tools to maximize safety and productivity. Conduct seasonal maintenance of equipment, following manufacturer’s guidelines and specifications. Ensure all equipment operates according to specifications, with the goal of maximizing equipment service life, safety, and possible salvage or trade-in value. Remove any unsafe equipment from service until repairs are completed and equipment is in proper working order. Research problems in manuals and online resources, consult with supervisor as needed to determine best and most efficient solutions for repairs. Log and record repairs in the asset tracking system.

  • Perform Basic Services and Repairs: Perform basic services and repairs such as replacing bulbs, tightening loose parts, all aspects of tire service (e.g., replacement, balance, rotation, etc.) on various fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. Perform multi-point inspections to identify and diagnose basic vehicle/equipment issues and escalate more complex maintenance and service issues as necessary. Perform manufacturer-specified preventative maintenance services A and B and safety checks on automotive vehicles. Secure the necessary repair parts from the parts vendor in order to complete all basic services and repairs. Interpret job orders, follow work flow and document all completed tasks. Document all maintenance and repairs by completing a check sheet for each service provided. Input service and repair data into the fleet work management system. Assist other mechanics with repairs/replacements such as brakes and suspension, minor adjustments and body work, engine tune-ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services.

  • Provide On-call Field Service: Respond to field calls for equipment service. Survey location and equipment for safety assurance. Perform basic on-site diagnostic procedures to determine if vehicle/equipment can be repaired on site or needs to be towed to shop. Change and repair tires (on turf equipment), replace batteries, and jump start equipment and vehicles in the field if needed.

  • Provide Facility and Resource Management: Salvage usable parts from equipment being removed from service. Properly dispose of and recycle used parts and equipment. Maintain shop inventory and supplies notifying parts staff of order needs within a timely manner. Stow equipment and supplies to be available for use as needed.

  • Clean and Maintain Shop Area: Maintain a clean and safe shop area. Assist co-workers in cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and mopping the shop area. Ensure shop floor, counters/surfaces are free of clutter, debris, and/or spills. Clean tools and shop equipment after use. Store tools and equipment in appropriate designated area.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Over two (2) years of experience in maintaining and repairing small engine equipment and/or automotive repair, tire service, and vehicle mechanics.
  • Completion of mechanic competency classification test at level I.
  • FEMA ICS 100c, 700b, and 552 within three (3) months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE certified technician in A1, A2, A4, A5 and T2.
  • Briggs-Stratton/Honda/Kawasaki small engine certification.

Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.

Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
  • Landscape and turf maintenance machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • The use of pressure gauges and vacuum pumps as they apply to the diagnosis of small engine performance issues.
  • The use of feeler gauges to adjust valves, magnetos and spark plug gaps.
  • Proper preventative maintenance measures as outlined by the manufacturer.
  • Automotive vehicle and diesel equipment service requirement and preventative maintenance procedures.

Ability to:

  • Perform multi-point vehicle/equipment inspections and identify service needs.
  • Respond to service calls and diagnose maintenance requirements in the field; prepare vehicles to be towed when necessary.
  • Read, comprehend, and follow equipment manuals and safety procedures.
  • Communicate maintenance requirements to outside vendors and contractors.
  • Work with all levels of personnel and outside vendors and maintain good working relationships.
  • Write work reports and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
  • Make mathematical calculations including fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement, and draw logical conclusions.
  • Work under pressure and with deadlines.
  • Problem solve in the use of equipment and material and in the application of techniques and procedures.
  • Use hand tools, air tools, electric tools, testing gauges, measuring tools, jacks, stands, fork lift truck, equipment lift, pick- up truck, press, air compressor, pressure washer, engraver, lockout tags, radios, tensioning equipment, and lubrication equipment.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include equipment diagnostic software and fleet maintenance software.


Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Shop.

Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, gloves, chaps, welding apparel, and lockout/tagout tags.

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperatures and physical hazards. Weekly exposure to noise and vibration. Monthly exposure to respiratory hazards when responding to field service calls. Seasonal exposure to wetness and/or humidity, and occasional slick conditions with ice or slippery substances. Constant exposure to mechanical, chemical, and fire hazards or physical danger associated with working with lawn mowers and machinery with moving parts. Monthly exposure to electrical hazards from ignition systems.

Physical Demands:

Constantly requires hearing, vision, and handling/grasping. Frequently requires talking, fine dexterity, lifting, standing, and walking. Occasionally requires carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting, bending, climbing, crouching, balancing, sitting, and foot controls. Heavy strength demands include constantly exerting up to 20 pounds, occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds, and rarely exerting up to 150 pounds.

Mental Demands:

Constantly requires working closely with others to correctly diagnosis machinery and make repairs. Frequently requires tedious or exacting work due to the necessity to make precise adjustments to machines and equipment; and noisy or distracting environment within the shop area due to multiple pieces of machinery running and the need to test equipment repairs. Occasionally requires time pressures and frequent change of tasks due to prioritization of repairs in order to get equipment back into the field.
