Position Overview
We are seeking a Lead UI/UX Designer – Token Specialist to architect and operationalize the token strategy for a large-scale, multi-brand design system. This role is highly technical and focuses on design tokens, semantic theming, variable architecture, and cross-platform implementation across Figma, Token Studio, and engineering frameworks such as React and React Native.
You will lead token strategy, partner with engineering to ensure parity between design and code, and guide designers across multiple products and brands. This role is ideal for someone who wants to work at the center of system architecture, multi-theme scaling, accessibility, governance, and design-engineering automation.
Key ResponsibilitiesToken Strategy & Architecture- Lead the creation, governance, and scaling of core → semantic → component → theme token architectures.
- Define naming conventions, inheritance patterns, variable collections, and semantic mapping across brands.
- Architect highly flexible token systems that support multi-brand, multi-platform experiences (UHC, Optum, Surest, etc.).
- Oversee implementation of brand switching and theme variations across Figma, Token Studio, and engineering pipelines.
- Ensure alignment between design, accessibility, engineering, and brand teams.
- Lead governance workflows, contribution standards, release processes, and documentation.
- Maintain consistency, quality, and compliance across all product teams using the system.
- Partner with engineers to maintain token parity via tools such as Style Dictionary, Code Connect, and token automation pipelines.
- Troubleshoot token bugs, inheritance issues, and platform inconsistencies.
- Integrate accessibility requirements such as color contrast tokens, motion tokens, and type scales.
- Ensure tokens support WCAG 2.1 and enterprise accessibility standards.
- Create advanced token documentation, guidelines, and onboarding materials for designers and engineers.
- Mentor UI/UX Designers, token contributors, and product teams adopting the design system.
- 5+ years in UI/UX or Product Design with 3+ years in design systems or token-focused work.
- Deep expertise in design token architecture, Figma Variables, Token Studio, and multi-theme systems.
- Strong proficiency in creating scalable systems in Figma (variables, components, libraries, branching, prototyping).
- Experience collaborating closely with engineering and design system teams.
- Strong understanding of WCAG accessibility, semantic theming, and cross-platform constraints.
- Excellent documentation, communication, and leadership skills.
- Experience with React, React Native, SwiftUI, or Android Compose.
- Experience managing enterprise-scale design systems.
- Familiarity with semantic versioning, release workflows, and automated token pipelines.
- Experience with AI-assisted design tools like Code Connect or Figma MCP.
