Summary:

    · The FBC Registered Nurse (RN) at UNC HEALTH Lenoir will operate as a key member of the health care team by providing high quality, evidence based patient care to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patients. The labor and delivery RN is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect nursing care responsibilities, as they relate to gynecological surgical patients, unit appropriate medical patients, and stable newborns. The labor and delivery RN must utilize the nursing process: assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating while caring for all patient populations on the Family Birth Center. The labor and delivery RN will perform patient interviews, medical screening exams, initial and ongoing medical/labor assessments, develop and implement nursing care plans, carry out pharmacological and non-pharmalogical interventions, educate patients and families, collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and ensure all social determinants of health are addressed prior to discharge. The labor and delivery RN will accurately and frequently maintain the patient’s electronic medical records and collaborate with outside facilities to acquire the patient’s medical/obstetrical history. The labor and delivery RN will provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. The labor and delivery RN will actively participate in outstanding service excellence standards as it relates to UNC HEALTH Lenoir’s mission to ensure exceptional healthcare for the people we serve and by following the Carolina Care tenants: knowing, being with, doing for, empowering, and enabling.


    Responsibilities:

      · The Family Birth Center provides care for gynecological, obstetrical and newborn patient populations. The unit is supported by a variety of resource persons and staff consisting of: registered nurses who specialize in women’s services and newborn care, nursing assistants, secretaries, clinical coordinators, and a unit director. Providers from Kinston Community Health Center, Lenoir County Health Department and UNC Women’s Health at Lenoir provide patient care for the gynecological and obstetrical patient populations. Providers from Kinston Pediatrics, Lenoir Family Medicine and Hope Physicians provide care for the newborn patient population. The focus of care is family-centered with well infants rooming in, providing maximum bonding opportunities and learning experiences for every patient.

      EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

      • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
      PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
      • None required for new graduates. Requirements for specialty areas are defined as 1-2 years of experience in specialty area or related clinical experience.

      LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
      • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina; BCLS certification; additional certifications required in specialty areas.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
      • Good interpersonal skills; Communicates clearly and concisely verbally and in writing
      • Exposure and basic skills in use of clinical computer systems
      • Self-motivation; strong organizational skills; able to multi-task; goal oriented
      • Strong customer focus
      • Strong judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT
      • Exposure to blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens and other infectious diseases requiring the use of protective equipment; exposure to other hazards, such as radiation, toxic waste, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, etc. based on the departments. Possible exposure to conditions, such as noxious odors, fumes, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation. Stressful work periods and rotating shifts.
      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT
      • Requires a range of physical activity from sedentary work to heavy work. Includes sitting, standing, walking and lifting patients; some carrying, pushing, pulling, and lifting objects involved in day-to-day activities. Ability to use appropriate Safe-Patient Handling equipment Visual acuity, auditory and verbal skills necessary. Ability to concentrate in surroundings.
