Job Summary

This role is essential in onboarding and training Medical Assistants within an Ambulatory Care Setting. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading orientation sessions and training programs for new medical assistant staff.
  • Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including department heads and curriculum developers, to design and evaluate the content of the Ambulatory Care Medical Assistant Orientation and related courses.
  • Demonstrating flexibility in working hours, which may include evenings and weekends, to meet staffing requirements.
  • Traveling to various locations within Ann Arbor and surrounding communities, such as Howell, Brighton, Ypsilanti, Canton, Livonia, Saline, and Chelsea, as necessary for training purposes.
  • Utilizing a hybrid work model, with opportunities for remote work on non-training days.

Responsibilities*

  • Conduct training classes for Allied Health personnel in Ambulatory Care Services (ACS).   
  • Work in collaboration with the department Manager, the ACS Clinical and Business Teams, and other UMHS Departments to offer refresher, optimization, skills enhancement, and new employee training.     
  • In collaboration with stakeholders, team members and UMMG leadership assess, design, develop, implement, and evaluate educational material for new and existing classes. 
  • Interact with appropriate management in Ambulatory Care Services and support areas to develop and modify program content, as well as general program objectives.  
  • Develop and implement program evaluation tools.     
  • Investigate and integrate new training methodologies. 
  • Effectively communicate to ACS employees the understanding of operational workflows.
  • Evaluate and initiate improvements in program services. 
  • Act as Ambulatory Care Services training liaison to other institutional business and operations areas. 
  • Promote vision, values, and goals of the University of Michigan Health System.  
  • Educate and promote institutional understanding of unit's goals and objectives. 
  • Serve on committees and task forces as requested. 
  • Consistently meet the organization's expectations for customer service. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Extensive medical assisting experience preferably in an ambulatory care setting.
  • Adaptable to technology and technology changes.
  • Able to effectively deliver scripted training material to groups of varying sizes for four hours or longer and the willingness to adapt to challenging training situations and personalities.
  • Ability to build rapport, engage adult learners and establish an enjoyable learning environment. Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.  
  • Graduation from an accredited medical assisting program.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently. 
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and to meet deadlines.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in administering and conducting training.
  • Experience creating and developing training materials.
  • Certification through AAMA or ABHES.
  • Knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies, procedures, practices and current Michigan Medicine systems.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar days.  The review and selection process may begin as early as the eighth day after posting. This opening may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended.
