Job Description
We are seeking highly motivated and outgoing temporary, Walking Tour Guides to lead informative and entertaining tours around Salem. PEM's Walking Tours will provide tour attendees with accurate and engaging information about the history and architecture of Salem, and the Historic Properties associated with the Peabody Essex Museum.
The Walking Tour Guide is a seasonal, part-time position responsible for leading up to four, 60-90 minute tours per day. The position requires approximately 1-3 miles of walking per tour. All Walking Tour Guides will attend a 3-4 week training prior to conducting tours and will be required to present a memorized script for each tour. In addition to conducting tours, guides will handle admission transactions and customer check-ins, provide daily reporting and ensure the safety of their groups.
Excellent speaking skills and an interest in history and education are essential. The ideal candidate will be able to manage groups and navigate varied subject matter with ease. Experience with tour guiding, acting, public speaking or storytelling is preferred, but we will train willing personalities. Knowledge of the Tessitura database and First Aid certification are both a plus. This position is temporary, benefits ineligible totaling 20-28 hours per week. The hourly range for this role is $19.00 to $19.50 commensurate with experience.
Applicants selected for an interview will be asked to give a 5 minute, in-person presentation on a historic story of their choice during the interview.
The Walking Tours Season runs from May 15th through Nov. 23rd and includes training in April.
