team, responsible for supporting and enhancing core systems that handle high-volume transactional data. In this role, you will design, develop, maintain, and enhance mainframe applications utilizing technologies such as JCL, COBOL, VSAM, EZTRIEVE, File Manager, and IBM IDz (including zConnect). The ideal candidate will have strong experience in COBOL development, and a solid understanding of mainframe batch processing. This role is critical to ensuring the reliability and performance of systems that support key business operations and will involve close collaboration with Product Owners in an Agile development environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Design, code, test, and debug mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, VSAM, and related technologies.

  • Enhance and maintain existing applications to meet evolving business requirements.

  • Implement and maintain integrations between mainframe applications and distributed systems, including through zConnect.

  • Analyze and improve program performance and system efficiency.

  • Conduct root cause analysis for performance issues and apply corrective measures.

  • Contribute to the refinement of CI/CD pipelines for mainframe environments.

  • Write and execute unit tests to ensure code quality and reliability.

  • Participate in code reviews and enforce best practices in coding standards.

  • Ensure applications meet financial industry regulatory requirements and security standards.

  • Maintain audit trails and support compliance documentation.

  • Partner with product owners, business analysts, and other developers to gather requirements and deliver solutions.

  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree and four to seven years of experience or equivalent education and software engineering training or experience
2. In-depth knowledge in information systems and ability to identify, apply, and implement IT best practices
3. Understanding of key business processes and competitive strategies related to the IT function
4. Ability to plan and manage projects and solve complex problems by applying best practices
5. Ability to provide direction and mentor less experienced teammates. Ability to interpret and convey complex, difficult, or sensitive information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, and 8 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in COBOL development on IBM mainframe systems.

  • Experience working in Agile development environments.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Banking or financial services experience.

  • Knowledge of specific applications, technology platforms, programming languages, systems, or business segments.

  • Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and software design with strong analytical and debugging skills.

  • Professional experience building high-quality applications or services from the ground up and scaling at an enterprise level.

  • Experience with Mainframe technologies, including: JCL, COBOL, VSAM, EZTRIEVE, File Manager, IBM IDz including zConnect, TSO/ISPF

  • Batch Processing
