Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Cemetery Data Intern is responsible for updating and maintaining records within the Cambridge Cemetery database, utilizing both scanned historical documents and field-verified information. Daily responsibilities include reviewing and integrating data from historical records, conducting on-site verification of grave markers, and ensuring the accuracy of grave locations within the City’s GIS database.

The role is part-time and allows up to 19.5 hours of work each week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The position reports to the DPW Manager of Information Systems and works closely with other Cemetery staff at the Cambridge DPW.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Updating digital burial records using information from scanned records
  • Collecting and recording information on grave sites using GIS software
  • Conducting field surveys of grave sites on foot, covering potentially +/- 2 miles a day in all weather
  • Coordinating work through the Information Systems Manager and Cemetery staff
  • Identifying and remediating data errors through QA/QC analysis under the direction of City staff

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Working knowledge of personal computer operation and experience working with Windows programs such as Access, Excel, and Word
  • Interest in historical records and genealogy
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read a map
  • Ability to work independently

PREFERRED

  • Undergraduate coursework in history
  • Experience working with data

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Moderate physical activity including lifting, bending, squatting, stretching, pushing, dragging, reaching, and pulling. Walk and/or bike up to several miles a day. Employee will be exposed to all weather conditions.
