Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, repair, maintain, and install mechanical equipment, with a strong background in plumbing. Responsible for a variety of work ranging from facility inspections, preventative maintenance rounds, regularly servicing equipment, major repairs, emergency repairs, and managing contracted work. The Mechanic is a member of the facilities maintenance team and shall support other maintenance personnel and perform other duties as required. Work will be conducted in a way that promotes animal welfare, environmental sustainability, as well as a sustainable culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Core Activities:

  • Assist Lead plumber, and work on a team for larger projects
  • Manage outside contractors
  • Troubleshoot complex refrigeration, equipment, and plumbing systems
  • Repair and rebuild equipment including boilers, chillers, cross contamination equipment, refrigerators & freezers, ice makers, coolers, ovens, stoves, cooktops, soda fountains, kettles, boilers, and fryers
  • Repair and install pipes, valves, hangers, gauges, and sensors for fresh water, salt water, pressurized gas, exhaust, venting, sewage, storm water, and animal life support systems
  • Install new equipment
  • Manage refrigerant gasses, stockpile, and reporting (i.e., charge, evacuate, track leaks, etc.)
  • Inspect and provide regular maintenance service for equipment
  • Utilize work management software to respond to work requests, track jobs progress, and improve inventory data and preventative maintenance content
  • Read equipment schematics, plans, and track changes
  • Maintain equipment inventories, complete material takeoffs for jobs, and purchase materials
  • Provide regular status reports to supervisors
  • Participate in safety and other training as required
  • Interface and communicate with other MBA departments

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • At least 5 years experience with plumbing and refrigeration trade experience
  • Certification of Completion of a minimum 10-hour OSHA Safety training
  • Professional skills with various types of piping in both small and large diameter
  • Advanced mechanical and power tool skills
  • Refrigeration certificate in EPA 608 Type I, II, and III required
  • CFESA certification
  • Good computer skills including, but not limited to MS Office suite
  • Good written and verbal communication and skills
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and to work an irregular schedule that may include early mornings, nights, evenings, or weekends
  • Ability to read and follow equipment schematics, and wiring diagrams, and safety procedures
  • Experience working in a safe manner compliant with the California Plumbing Code, UPC, Am Water, AWWA standards, and OSHA
  • Experience with elevated work, work over water, and work in a confined space
  • Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Core Values
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within the first 3 months of employment, a valid California driver's license in order to operate Monterey Bay Aquarium vehicles

Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Typical office equipment, ladders, hand tools, power tools, shop tools, person lifts, forklift and gages

  • Constant sitting, standing, walking, bending

  • Occasional unassisted lifting up to 80 lbs

  • Main Aquarium and out buildings. At times over water, in confined spaces, and elevated work

Hourly Compensation Range:

$32.36-$39.42 USD per hour. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
