Product Associate

New York, NY

Job Description

We're looking for a

Product Associate

This role is Hybrid, New York Office

Cornerstone is looking for an ambitious individual who is fascinated by the intersection of AI product development and the law. Our AI-powered talent capabilities process people data across dozens of jurisdictions, which means questions about personal data, transparency, and high-risk classification are product questions, not just legal ones. As a Product Associate with the New York product team, you will partner with product managers, designers, and engineers and help translate emerging AI regulation - with particular focus on personal data handling and the EU AI Act - into practical guidance our teams can build against.

This is a hands-on program, not a shadowing program. Over the course of a full year, you will own a defined body of work, present it to product and engineering leadership, and leave behind artifacts the team continues to use. You will be mentored directly by senior product managers and will partner with our legal, security, and AI engineering counterparts. This is a fixed 1 year term, hybrid in our New York office.

In this role, you will...

  • Build and maintain an inventory of AI-powered features across the product portfolio, capturing the purpose, data inputs, model behavior, and human oversight of each.
  • Map that inventory against EU AI Act risk categories, and draft plain-language summaries of what each classification implies for product requirements, documentation, and release timing.
  • Trace how personal data flows through AI features - what is collected, where it is stored, what is used for inference or training, and what is retained - and flag gaps for follow-up with product and engineering owners.
  • Draft product-facing guidance, checklists, and requirement templates that help product managers ask the right privacy and AI-governance questions early in discovery rather than late in review.
  • Research and monitor developments in AI and privacy regulation - the EU AI Act, GDPR, U.S. state privacy and automated-decision laws, and New York City Local Law 144 - and summarize what actually changes for our roadmap.
  • Partner with legal, security, and engineering to turn regulatory obligations into written user stories, acceptance criteria, and testable requirements.
  • Support customer-facing responses to AI and privacy questions in security reviews, RFPs, and customer escalations, working with the product managers who own those relationships.
  • Contribute to product discovery through customer feedback, competitive research, and data analysis, so that governance recommendations are grounded in how customers actually use the product.
  • Present your findings and recommendations to product leadership at the midpoint and close of the internship.

You've got what it takes if you...

  • Hold a Bachelor's, in law, public policy, computer science, information science, or have related experience.
  • 6+ months experience as a paralegal, supporting teams with legal research
  • Have demonstrated interest in AI governance, privacy, or technology regulation through coursework, clinic or journal work, research, an internship, or a personal project.
  • Can read a dense regulatory text and explain what it means to an engineer in a paragraph, without losing the nuance that matters.
  • Have excellent written communication skills and are comfortable presenting to stakeholders who are more senior than you.
  • Are analytical and structured, and are comfortable forming a recommendation with incomplete information while being explicit about the assumptions behind it.
  • Show curiosity about how AI systems actually work - how models are trained, prompted, evaluated, and monitored - and are willing to learn the technical fundamentals.
  • Are comfortable working with engineering and design teams, and understand software development fundamentals or are eager to learn them quickly.
  • Can manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment and follow through without close supervision.
  • Are available to commit to a paid, full-year internship on a hybrid schedule from our New York office.

An extra dose of awesome if...

  • You have hands-on familiarity with the EU AI Act, GDPR, or a comparable framework such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework or ISO/IEC 42001.
  • You have worked with enterprise software, HR technology, or another regulated data domain.
  • You think in terms of outcomes and customer trust, not compliance checkboxes.
  • You view AI as a tool for both product innovation and your own productivity.
  • You take ownership, move with urgency, and finish what you start.
